Master’s Degree

The Master of Science in Veterinary Forensic Sciences is designed for professionals in veterinary medicine, forensic science, and humane investigations who are interested in accelerating their careers in veterinary forensic science. The program provides students with the knowledge and skills that will help secure justice for victims of animal cruelty. 

Students will learn how to: 

  • Recognize indicators of animal abuse
  • Properly document and process animal crime scenes
  • Handle and analyze forensic evidence
  • Understand animal cruelty laws
  • Navigate the criminal justice system 

The comprehensive program includes: 

  • Five 3-credit core classes covering animal forensic investigations, animal cruelty and interpersonal violence, and the collection and documentation of evidence
  • Five 3-credit electives in a number of subjects, such as animal law, wildlife conservation, animal behavior, veterinary forensic pathology, and more 

Courses are online and can be completed from the comfort of your home.

Note: Students are expected to maintain a 3.0 GPA in the program

World-Class Faculty

Students will learn from experienced faculty who specialize in veterinary forensic pathology, crime scene investigation, animal behavior, animal law, forensic entomology, and forensic DNA analysis. The UF Veterinary Forensic Sciences program faculty members have worked with law enforcement and animal protection agencies, crime scene investigators, veterinarians from general practice to specialty medicine, attorneys, and more.

What is this program?

The University of Florida’s online Master of Science in Veterinary Forensic Sciences is open to qualified local, national, and international professionals who work in who work in veterinary medicine, forensic science, criminal investigations, animal science, animal law, and animal welfare.

This program is offered through the UF College of Veterinary Medicine. Students are prepared for real-world situations in veterinary forensic science by faculty members who have years of experience in the field working with law enforcement and animal protection organizations.

The MS in Veterinary Forensic Sciences is comprised of five 3-credit core requirements (15 credits) plus 15 elective credits. Master’s degree students may choose between a thesis and non-thesis option. Complete courses from the comfort of your home, on your own time.

Upon completion of the program, graduates will earn a Master of Science with a major in Veterinary Medical Sciences and a concentration in Veterinary Forensic Science issued by the Graduate School of the University of Florida. The student’s transcript will read Master of Science, graduation date, major Veterinary Medical Sciences, concentration Veterinary Forensic Science. The student’s diploma will read Master of Science with a major in Veterinary Medical Sciences issued by the Graduate School of the University of Florida.
